Belarusian human rights defenders demand to cancel forced assignment in Belarus

Lawyers from Belarusian Helsinki Committee have sent an appeal to the Constitutional Court. They remind that the right for free education is guaranteed by the Constitution.

A lawyer from BHC Aleh Hulak informed ERB about human rights defenders’ viewpoint: “It is necessary to stick to the Constitution. If the state thinks that it cannot guarantee free education, the Constitution should be changed. Or they should change the legislation and find ways of providing really free education”.
Let us remind you that 65 criminal cases have been started against graduates who have not arrived in the places of their assignment this year. They will have to pay from three to five thousand dollars.

Aleh Hulak thinks that traces of forced labour forbidden by international agreements can be noticed in Belarus.

Students who entered universities before 2002 (before the law on forced assignment was adopted) and were sure they were getting free education were also made to obey the forced assignment law.
